Our Dietitian’s Choice

"Mama Mia! What is not to like about this well-loved dish? We know that the number of children who do not get enough iron or zinc in their diet is quite high. For some children, increasing their intake of foods containing these nutrients could make a difference to mood, behaviour and learning. Our homemade Bolognese is made with both minced beef and quorn mince, and together with the garlic bread makes this choice is a top scorer for the nutrients iron and zinc. The tomato-based sauce benefits from added veg, so rest assured, even those a bit shy on accepting the side salad accompaniment get a hidden bonus And, as always, we encourage salad as a nutritious accompaniment."

Sustainable School Meals

UK Farm Assured Standards - The main ingredient of any bolognese is beef mince – and we only use quality UK Red Tractor Beef Mince, supporting UK farmers whilst being reassured that this has been produced to independently inspected standards relating to treatment of the animals, food safety and traceability.

Reduced Carbon Emissions - We know that beef mince is high in greenhouse gas emissions (around 32.13 Co2e). So we tweaked our recipe and replaced 40% of the beef mince with quorn mince with a carbon footprint of just 1.29 Co2e - reducing the carbon emissions in this recipe by 39% with just this one simple change.
