New red recycling bags for plastics, tins, cans and cartons are being delivered to households.

From the end of October and throughout November, every household will get a new bag, a leaflet explaining what to put in the new red bag, and a guide to the council’s full kerbside recycling service.

You are asked to start using your new red bag as soon as you receive it.

You will still need to use your black recycling boxes for glass, as well as separately bagged paper, household batteries and textiles.

Councillor Sue Morgan, Executive Member for Waste and Sustainability, said: “The new red bags are easier to carry, store, and can contain more than the black boxes.

“They will also improve the efficiency of the collection service, which we hope will encourage people to recycle more. They will also reduce the risk of contamination, which will help to Raise the Rate by ensuring as much material is recycled as possible.

“Please start using your red bag as soon as you receive it and put it out on your next collection day along with your black recycling box, blue cardboard bag, and brown food waste caddy.”

In 2023, 87 per cent of people who took part in the Raise the Rate survey said they would be prepared to separate their recycling.

The new bags will have lids with Velcro seals, like the blue cardboard bags, which will reduce the number of wind-blown items causing litter. You will no longer need to use nets on your black boxes.

You can either keep any spare black boxes, give them to a neighbour or take them to the Household Recycling Centre in New Inn.
