Cans, plastic, a scooter and a lonely bike wheel are just some of the items of rubbish picked up as part of Torfaen’s annual Spring Clean.

Over 100 bags of rubbish were collected from five litter hot spots this year as part of the clean up, which was run in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.

Torfaen Spring Clean litter picks took place in Northville, Cwmbran Boating Lake, Cold Barn Farm, Garn Lakes and Pontypool. All locations were suitable for volunteers with mobility problems.

Daniel Hodson, Landscape and Recreation Policy & Partnerships Manager, said: “Thank you to everyone who took the time to volunteer and clean up litter hot spot areas as part of this year's Torfaen Spring Clean.

“We're also grateful to the many individuals and community groups who litter pick throughout the year — your ongoing hard work is truly appreciated.

“Litter is not only unsightly and unhygienic, it can also pose a serious danger to animals. There’s really no reason to drop litter, especially with more than 700 bins available across the borough.

“As part of the Torfaen Deal, we are always happy to support residents and groups who wish to carry out litter picks, including offering advice and guidance on borrowing equipment. If this is something you or your group would like to get involved in, please get in touch.”.

If you would like to host your own litter pick, equipment can be collected free from one of Keep Wales Tidy’s Litter Picking Hubs.

If you run or work for a business who would like to become a Litter Free Zone, visit the Keep Wales Tidy website.

This project contributes to the council's well-being objectives to respond to the climate and nature emergency by working towards delivering the Litter and Fly-tipping Action Plan. You can read more about the council's County Plan here.
