Recycling and enforcement officers will be contacting households who do not recycle certain items, like food or cardboard, from next week.

Since September, the team has focused on speaking to residents whose purple-lidded bins have been overfilled or have additional rubbish bags placed alongside them.

They have provided information and advice about how to increase the amount they recycle, which has led to a 19 per cent increase in food waste recycling, a six per cent increase in container recycling and a five per cent reduction in purple-lidded waste.

However, the borough's average recycling rates is still below the Welsh Government's target of 70 per cent recycling.

From next week, the team will be contacting households who do not present a full suite of recycling bags or caddies over a two-week period, as well as continuing to monitor purple-lidded bin waste.

The aim will be to help residents recycle everything they can using the kerbside service and reduce the amount they put into their purple-lidded bins.

Anyone struggling to reduce their waste will be given support. However, if no changes are made, they could be issued with a warning letter and ultimately a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice.

Claire Cutforth, Head of Waste Transformation, said: “We know many residents want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, however, research shows the majority of items thrown out as rubbish could have been recycled as part of our weekly kerbside recycling service.

“By talking directly to residents, our officers will be able to offer support and guidance to help residents reduce their rubbish and recycle more.”

Since September, 42,000 Keeping Up with the Joneses recycling booklets have been delivered, and hundreds of residents have been spoken to. It is really positive to see that most of these are now managing their waste correctly, meaning that just 25 Section 46 Notices and 11 Fixed Penalty Notices have been issued.

The team has also been successful in finding evidence relating to 11 potential fly tipping incidents which has been sent to the public protection team.
