A primary school has been praised for providing good quality education for all pupils, including those with additional learning needs.
Estyn inspectors visited Penygarn Primary School, in Pontypool, in January, as part of the annual monitoring schedule.
The Estyn team concluded that Penygarn is a caring community, where pupils feel safe, enthusiastic about learning, form positive relationships, and demonstrate respect with their peers and staff.
The report published this month, also recognised the schools efforts to create strong relationships with parents and families and provide an effective range of support in collaboration with outside agencies, which places strong emphasis on supporting well-being for all.
Provisions available for pupils with additional learning needs are deemed highly beneficial by Estyn, with a strong culture of safeguarding across the school, and a headteacher who is effective in her role, providing strong and caring leadership.
Estyn observed the variety of relevant learning experiences, which keeps pupils interested in their learning. As a result, most pupils including those with additional learning needs, engage well with their learning.
Sarah Hirons, Penygarn Chair of Governors, said: “I would like to thank the headteacher, senior leadership team, governing body, and all staff, for their hard work and dedication to the school community. It was a pleasure to read Estyn’s Report, highlighting our inclusive, caring, and nurturing ethos, which pupils benefits from, and pupils, parents and staff are proud of.
“This truly reflects the mission statement of our school ‘nurturing the hearts and minds of the future.’ I am very privileged to be the chair of governors at Penygarn Primary School."
Lyndsay Smith, Penygarn Headteacher, added: “It is a pleasure to work with such dedicated and successful staff and professionals, I am very proud of the recent Estyn inspection and report and would like to thank the pupils, parents, Governors and wider community for their ongoing support for the school.”
Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “it’s so pleasing to read another positive inspection Estyn report which highlights key aspects of school life for pupils and staff.
“This reiterates the continuous drive to improve education services across Torfaen, and how schools and the council are working towards securing better outcomes for pupils.”
The inspectors recommended the school sharpens self-evaluation so that improvement focuses on pupils.
