A Welsh-medium school which teaches philosophical thinking alongside its curriculum has been recognised by the Society for the Advancement of Philosophical Enquiry and Reflection in Education.

Ysgol Panteg, in Pontypool, was given Silver status by the organisation last year thanks to its Philosophy for Children programme, which sees pupils consider the usefulness of technology, personal safety and self-care, to big topic questions such as ‘What is friendship?’ and ‘What is true happiness?’.

It has now become the first Welsh-medium primary school in Wales to achieved the Gold standard.

Bethany Exall, Programme leader at Ysgol Panteg, said: “This award is a celebration of the extraordinary achievements of our children.

"Their boundless curiosity, fearless engagement, and insightful contributions have turned every classroom discussion into a vibrant journey of discovery. It is their passion for enquiry that has brought our philosophy programme to life and made this accolade possible.”

Headteacher Dr Matthew Williamson-Dicken said: “I would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort and dedication of our staff, whose commitment has been instrumental in this transformation.

"The passion and insight our children demonstrate through their lively discussions and enquiries is truly inspiring. This award confirms that our school is about more than academic attainment: it is about inspiring our children to think deeply, act innovatively, and lead with both insight and compassion.”

David Childs, the school’s Chair of Governors, added: “What sets Ysgol Panteg apart is not just what our children learn, but how they learn to think.

"This award reflects a culture where curiosity is encouraged, voices are valued, and every learner is empowered to question, reflect, and grow. As governors, we see this not as a culmination, but as a springboard—proof that Welsh-medium education can lead the way in shaping thoughtful, principled citizens for the future.”
