Exams success for pupils

More than 1,000 Year 11 pupils collected their GCSE exam results today.

Among them were Cwmbran High School pupils Amelie Smith (photographed), who got 9 A*s and 2As, and Milana Manzhai, who moved from Ukraine four years ago, got 1 A* and 8As. 

Fellow student Dylan Stephens got 8A*s and 3As and is studying A-Levels in maths, computer science and geography.

At Croesyceiliog School, there were celebrations for pupils Prasidda Engden, who got 12 A* and A grades, Conor, who got 8 A*s and a Distinction in Additional Maths and Madeleine, who got 10 A*s and a Distinction.

Abersychan School pupil Matilda Thomas-Symonds got 11A*, 1A, 1 Distinction, as well as an A-grade maths AS level. Fellow pupils Poppy-Jayne Bevan got 8A*s, 3As, 1B and Jack Marshall got 6A*, 6A, 1 Distinction.

St Alban's RC High School pupils Harry De-Gare Pitt, MiQi Lin and Kirsty Wang all got 8A*s and 5As.

Pupils Mair Davies, who got 11A*s, Jack Lawrence, who got 1A* and 7As, and Aaron Wyper, who got 7A*s and 3As, were among those who collected their results at West Monmouth School. 

At Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, 77 per cent of pupils achieved A*-C grades, with 17 per cent getting A* and A grades. 

Twenty-five pupils at the Torfaen Pupil Referral Unit also collected their exam results.

Across Wales, 62.5 per cent of pupils got A* to C grades - slightly higher than last year.

From September, GCSE exams will align with the new Curriculum for Wales.
