Torfaen Council has been working with Bron Afon Community Housing to increase the number of flats with recycling facilities.
This week, 18 flats at Albion Road flats were added to the council’s weekly kerbside recycling scheme.
Anthea Roger, 57, resident of Albion Road flats, said: “I’m really happy that I can now recycle weekly. In the last flats I lived in I recycled, so I’ve missed it here.
“It’s not hard to recycle, and it reduces the amount of rubbish that goes in your purple lidded bin.
“I’ll definitely be encouraging other residents to recycle in the building now.”
Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “Each set of flats has its own set of challenges, so we are thrilled that Bron Afon have been able to get another 18 of their flats using our food waste recycling collections scheme. The waste team will be continuing to work with Bron Afon over the next few years to get more flats recycling.
“We are all working hard to raise the recycling rate in Torfaen, and we are thrilled that more residents can now access the kerbside recycling scheme.”
Dusi Thomas, Sustainability and Environmental Manager, Bron Afon Community Housing, said, “We are proud to support people who want to improve the communities they live in and will do whatever we can to encourage recycling.
“We want to continue working with the council to help Torfaen increase its recycling rate and minimise waste going to landfill. This is something everyone can easily do and it helps reduce carbon emissions and saves energy.
“We are pleased to be able to provide a practical solution for our customers at Albion Road, and will take our learnings to other communities to help provide easy access to recycling facilities for more of our customers.”
Increasing the number of flats with kerbside recycling facilities is part of the council’s Raise the Rate campaign to increase household recycling to 70 per cent by 2025.
