Next year, as part of a cemeteries review, a public consultation will take place.
A public survey was one of the recommendations in a report discussed on Wednesday 15 November by the Cleaner Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
Councillors heard the number of complaints about the service had increased this year, with the most common complaints relating to operational policies and practices.
Therefore, the aim of the consultation will be to identify and address areas for improvement. The survey will comprise questions, including how service users find the facilities at cemeteries, to their experience of dealing with staff.
Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, said: “It has been some time since our cemetery service has been reviewed, so this seems like the opportune time.
“Next year we will consult with the public and other stakeholders who use the cemetery service for their honest feedback about what they find good, and what they think needs improving.
“We need to make sure that the service fulfils its duties for services users, but we have to be realistic about what can be achieved in the current economic climate.
“Some quick improvements were discussed in the scrutiny meeting such as updating the Council’s webpages to help answers service users’ questions.”
Other recommendations included making sure all cemeteries have adequate information and signage, and reviewing the policy on what is acceptable to be left on graveside.
