A team of primary school pupils from Pontypool has come third in a national competition to produce a video to promote internet safety.

The members of Griffithstown Primary School’s Digital Leaders Club competed against 40 schools across Wales in the National Hwb Safer Internet Day Film competition.

Their video called Harry Tiktoker and the Digital Wizard World is now available for use by other schools on the Hwb digital learning platform.

Year 6 pupil and digital leader Scarlette Smith, who plays the part of Hermione Facebook, said: "This was fun because we got to work as a team to write the script and it was interesting because it was something that we have not done before".

Year 6 pupil Finley Nicholls, who stars as Severus Skype, added: "I enjoyed taking part in it and also I was happy that we made it to the final. It was a great achievement for the school. This was the first time we made it to the final."

The competition was hosted by the Welsh Rugby Union and Hwb, with awards presented by WRU players Rhys Priestland and Alisha Butchins.

The school’s digital leaders club is run by Miss Rebecca Thomas, who said: “Pupils in our digital leaders’ club have worked so hard and should be proud of what they have achieved for the school in receiving this award.

“I feel that the children are much more aware about how they can stay safe online and we will continue to improve the digital competences and e-safety understanding of all pupils in a variety of fun, humorous and creative ways – just like the film.”

The club is just one of several extra-curricular activities offered by the school to provide pupils with a varied learning experience.

The school has backed Torfaen Council’s #NotInMissOut campaign, which aims to encourage good attendance by promoting the exciting experiences pupils have by going to school regularly.

Harry Tiktoker and the Digital Wizard World is available to watch on the Hwb platform and the Griffithstown Primary School YouTube channel.
