Abandoned Shopping Trolleys

Abandoned shopping trolleys can be more than just an eyesore. If left in an inappropriate place they can be a hazard to pedestrians, cyclists and road users, as well as attracting fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. 

The local supermarkets in Torfaen make their own arrangements for their own abandoned trollies, this is carried out by a private company called Trolleywise. 

If a trolley is an immediate danger to the public, they will endeavour to remove it within 24 hours. 

What can I do to help? 

To help reduce the number of abandoned shopping trolleys you can do the following:

• Once you have used the shopping trolley, leave it in a sensible location such as a trolley bay in a supermarket or town centre car park, ready for collection by the store. 
• Don't use a shopping trolley to transport your shopping home. 
• If you notice a shopping trolley abandoned please report it to the supermarket directly.

If a store doesn't respond to a call within 24 hours, residents should then contact Trolleywise or Collex.

Note: Definition - A 'shopping trolley' is a trolley provided by the owner of a shop to customers to enable them to carry goods purchased at the shop. This definition excludes power-assisted trolleys. The powers in the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005 apply to trolleys in any condition, and therefore may be used in relation to unserviceable trolleys and trolley parts.
