Community Links

Community Link Orientation Panel

The Community Links project aims to encourage people to use more sustainable transport methods to travel around Torfaen whether to get to work, to school or for fitness or pleasure. New pedestrian and cycle links have been created and existing routes signposted to help people walk and cycle more easily between local communities. Originally centred on Pontypool and surrounding area, the scheme has been extended to the communities of Blaenavon and Cwmbran along the Afon Lwyd Trail.

New links have been created along:

  • The Afon Lwyd Greenway: Cwmbran Boating Lake to Chapel Lane Pontrhydyrun. From here you can link via Chapel Lane to the NCN492 route at Bevans Lane.
  • The Riverside: Pontypool town centre to Pontnewynydd Park
  • The Abersychan Greenway: Pontnewynydd to Abersychan

Improved links have been provided through:

  • Churchwood: connecting Trevethin to Pontypool Town Centre

Please note that not all routes are designated for cycling. Please dismount at these locations.

Orientation Panels

Along the routes you will find a series of orientation panels. These show your location, the amenities that are available locally such as toilets and cafes and any places of interest you can find nearby. These include community facilities such as educational and training establishments as well as museums and parks. A detailed look at an orientation panel is available here. Just hover over the yellow boxes for more information.

As you travel along these routes you will notice the branding changing to identify the different settlements you are passing through; namely Blaenavon Heritage Town, Pontypool Market Town and Cwmbran New Town

Waymarker Posts

Waymarker PostWithin Pontypool, timber way marker posts will guide you along the route. The finger arms show the principal destination i.e Blaenavon, Pontypool or Cwmbran so you know which way you are travelling. This may not be the direction you are used to because of the off-road nature of the route. Intermediate destinations, such as Abersychan and Pontnewynydd, are also shown including approximate distances in kilometres. Post mounted aluminium signs possessing the Community Links logo will further reinforce the route.
