Active Travel School Plans

Children monitoring traffic at Blenheim Road Community Primary SchoolWe are working with schools to develop Active Travel School Plans.

The plans set out how pupils and staff can be encourages to walk, cycle or scoot to school, rather than travel by car.

Active Travel School Plans reduce congestion and pollution and encourage regular exercise.

Blenheim Road Community and Coed Eva Primary Schools were the first in Torfaen to adopt active travel plans in 2022.

They include a commitment to promoting the benefits of active travel in lessons, school assemblies and events to mark Walk to School Week in May to increase the number of pupils and staff who travel to school actively.

Pupils and teachers are also being encouraged to actively travel to school, to lessons off sites and to any school events when possible.

Active Travel School Plans can also include identifying “park and stride” locations, where parents can park a short distance from their school and children can walk or scoot in or setting up school walking buses.
