Listed Buildings
Torfaen currently has 251 listed buildings. Each building is listed by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments following a detailed survey. There are three categories of listing:
Grade I: These are buildings that are deemed to be of exceptional national interest. There are 3 in Torfaen e.g. Blaenavon Ironworks
Grade II*: These are buildings considered to be of more than special architectural and/or historic interest. Torfaen has 22 such buildings e.g. Crane Street Baptist Church, Pontypool
Grade II: These buildings are of special architectural and/or historic interest. There are 226 in Torfaen e.g. Llanfrechfa Grange.
It is a criminal offence to alter, extend or demolish a listed building in any manner that would affect its character as a building of special architectural and/or historic interest without first obtaining Listed Building Consent from Torfaen County Borough Council. You should contact the Conservation Officer first to find out whether you need Listed Building Consent.
The Conservation Team is able to provide pre-application advice on proposed works and can provide advice on acceptable methods of repairing historic buildings using appropriate techniques and materials. If you are not sure if your building is listed, the simplest way to find out is to check with the Conservation Team where the list is maintained.
A building can be listed at any time. If yours becomes listed you will be notified by the Council and by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments.
