Listed Buildings
What is listing?
Buildings are listed when Cadw consider them to be of special architectural or historic interest.
The term ‘listed building’ is wide ranging and includes not only buildings such as houses, churches or barns but also walls, milestones, bridges, telephone boxes and many other types of structure.
There are currently around 250 listed buildings in Torfaen. View the location of the listed buildings in Torfaen on the Cof Cymru website.
Listed Building Consent
When a building is listed, it is protected under the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2023. Consent is needed when a proposed alteration or extension affects the special interest of a listed building, or those in its curtilage. A Heritage Impact Statement is required for all Listed Building Consent applications. A printable LBC form and guidance notes are available, however most applicants choose to apply online.
Apply for listed building consent
It is a criminal offence to carry out such works to a listed building without first acquiring the necessary Listed Building Consent.
Listing is not a preservation order but it is intended to help manage change and protect the building, its setting and its features from unsympathetic works that could damage its special interest.
Listed Buildings at Risk
Cadw regularly survey the condition of all listed buildings in Wales. Both Welsh Government and the Council have powers to serve statutory notices to address listed buildings that are in poor condition or at risk.
