Conservation Areas
Conservation areas are distinct parts of the historic environment designated by local planning authorities for their special architectural or historic interest. There are currently six conservation areas in Torfaen: Blaenavon Town Centre; Pontypool Town Centre; Llantarnam; Upper Cwmbran; Cwmavon; and Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. The documents linked below describe the character of each conservation area.
Each area was designated to help preserve and enhance its special character and appearance. The boundaries were identified and designated following an assessment of the quality of the area, including the contribution of key individual or groups of buildings, trees, open spaces and streetscape.
The Council must aim to preserve or enhance the character or appearance of conservation areas. Designation affords an additional layer of control over various types of development such as demolition, and permitted development rights relating to dwellinghouses (see Welsh Government’s planning guidance for the public). The Council will carefully consider the form, design and detail of development proposals and the likely impact on the character of the conservation area. Please note that permission is also required for works to trees within conservation areas (see Welsh Government's Protected Trees guidance).
