A pioneering training programme is helping residents move into Wales’ rapidly expanding advanced manufacturing and semiconductor sector.
Thirteen people have completed the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing in Semiconductor Technologies qualification, thanks to Torfaen Works and training provider iungo Training Solutions.
It is the first course of its kind to be run by a local authority in Wales and is funded through Welsh Government’s Communities for Work Plus programme..
The course combined hands‑on training, such as soldering, wire harness construction and fault‑finding, with theory shaped by feedback from local employers currently recruiting in the sector.
One of those who completed the course was Cai Speirs, 27, from Cwmbran, who has since got a job with Saffran, in Cwmbran.
He said: “The support from Torfaen Works team was really helpful and made the whole process much easier. They helped me with things like updating my CV.
“I am really grateful for the opportunity, and I would encourage anyone who is looking to start a career in this sector to go on the advanced manufacturing course.”
Advanced manufacturing specialising in green technologies, semiconductors and related fields is one of the UK’s fastest‑growth sectors.
Cllr Joanne Gauden, Executive Member for Economy, Skills, and Regeneration, said: “This latest opportunity through Torfaen Works shows that, as a council, we’re committed to inspiring lifelong learning and ambition, by empowering people of all ages to lead informed, independent and prosperous lives.”
“We know that the majority of people seeking work locally already have strong transferable skills, so it’s fantastic to hear that this course has given them the additional skills and confidence to access well‑paid roles in a sector where demand is growing fast.”
A second course is due to start next week and further programmes planned later this year.
Torfaen Works supports residents of all ages to develop skills and move into sustainable employment. For more information or support, email employability@torfaen.gov.uk or call 01633 647743.
