Children across Torfaen are being encouraged to pick up a book this summer as the popular Summer Reading Challenge returns.
The annual challenge, which launched on Saturday, invites children aged four to 11 to read or listen to six or more library books over the summer holiday period.
This year's theme, Read to the Beat, celebrates creativity and self-expression through books inspired by music, dance and storytelling.
Young readers who take part will be able to collect rewards along the way, including stickers, magazines and book bags - while stocks last.
One lucky participant will win a special prize in a draw held at the end of the challenge.
There’s also a mini challenge specifically designed for toddlers and children aged 3 and under.
Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Council's Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said:
"The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun way to keep children reading over the holidays and helps ensure they return to school in September as confident and enthusiastic readers.
“Reading is one of the most important skills a child can develop, helping to build confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.”
“With more than 400 children completing the challenge last year's, we'd love to see even more taking part this summer.”
The challenge is completely free to join. Children can take part using books, eBooks and audiobooks borrowed through Torfaen Libraries, with free library membership available to all residents.
Alongside the reading challenge, Torfaen Libraries will be hosting a packed programme of summer activities, including hip hop workshops, digital music sessions, shanty singing and themed Lego clubs.
Popular story and craft sessions will also return throughout August for children aged five to 10 at libraries across the borough.
The Summer Reading Challenge is organised nationally by The Reading Agency and will run until the end of September.
