Young people from across the Greater Gwent Regional Youth Forum have produced a new short film encouraging their peers to register to vote ahead of the Senedd election on 7 May.
The project, developed by members of the Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly youth forums, aims to demystify the voting process for first-time voters.
The film explains why registering matters, what happens inside a polling station, and reassures young people about the privacy and confidentiality of their ballot.
The work follows recent collaboration between forum members, who have been meeting across the region and taking part in joint projects, including sharing ideas on how to improve young people’s mental health and wellbeing, anti-vaping projects, and environmental campaigns.
The release of the film comes as the 20 April voter registration deadline approaches, with young people encouraged to sign up now at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote In Wales, people can register to vote from age 14 and cast their vote from age 16.
Harry Legge, Member of Torfaen Youth Forum, said: “I really enjoyed making the video and working with young people from the other youth forums, I hope it helps young people to vote”
Phill Wilson, Children & Young People’s Engagement & Participation Officer, said: “It was great to see young people from the three local authorities come together to make this video.
"We hope it will encourage other young people to register and take part in the Senedd elections on May 7.”
The Regional Youth Forum brings together young people from across theregion to discuss the issues that matter to them and influence decisions affecting their lives.
The film will be shared on council and youth service social media channels as part of the national Welcome to Your Vote Week campaign.
