A new funding programme to support projects that bring communities together and promote a sense of belonging is now open.
The Community Cohesion Grant for 2026 is available to community groups, third sector organisations and schools in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly and Torfaen, with awards of between £500 and £2,000 available.
The fund supports projects that strengthen community spirit and help people feel more connected to the areas where they live.
Last year’s scheme helped bring a range of projects to life, including Croesyceiliog School’s Peace Garden, who received £500 for a pupil-led initiative that has become a powerful symbol of unity and inclusion.
Designed and delivered by the school’s Interact Club, the garden celebrates the area’s diverse communities through features such as a Peace Pole displaying multiple languages and artwork reflecting different cultures.
The space is now used daily by pupils and has gained recognition beyond the local area.
Year 8 pupil, Matilda said: "I feel honoured to be part of the first Peacebuilder Club. It’s given me the chance to connect with others who care about making a difference, and it’s helped me grow both as a person and a leader.
"It’s empowering to know that even as pupils, we have the ability to shape the world around us for the better’.
Pritti Davies, Teaching Assistant and project lead, said:“The flowers within the Peace Garden represent the heritage of the many nationalities within the school community, alongside Welsh heritage.
"One of the four languages displayed on the Peace Pole is Welsh, ensuring local identity is embedded at the heart of the project”.
The initiative highlights how small grants can have a lasting impact, not only creating physical spaces, but also building pride, confidence and stronger connections within communities.
It also aligns with the new Torfaen Deal - a new way of working between the council, businesses and residents to help shape services and support.
Peter Jones, Torfaen Council's Executive Member forCorporate Governance and Resources, said: "We’ve seen first-hand how this funding has helped local groups bring people together and strengthen community spirit.
"Now, more than ever, those connections are vital, and I would encourage any community group, school or third sector organisation to take advantage of this opportunity".
The 2026 fund is now open for applications, supporting both new ideas and existing projects looking to grow or become more sustainable.
The deadline for applications is 10 July 2026.
