Two new volunteers have stepped up to support Torfaen’s long‑running Take a Stroll programme, ensuring the borough’s much‑loved walking groups continue to flourish.

Local residents Sue Daintith, 68, and Caroline Jenkins, 70, both from Pontypool, are the latest community members to qualify as walk leaders.

They have joined a team of 15 volunteers to help guide weekly walks in the Blaenavon, Pontypool and Cwmbran areas, helping residents be more active and connected.

Sue, who previously walked with the group and has since returned to offer her support, said: “I first joined the walks to feel safer, as I’d been warned about walking alone somewhere remote. The group was so friendly and reassuring that I always felt supported.

"I became a walk leader simply because I wanted to help. There are always plenty of people keen to walk, but not always someone willing to lead.”

Torfaen Take a Stroll is run by the Council’s Health, Sport and Fitness team and offers two types of walks tailored to different abilities:

  • Progressive walks covering 3–6 miles
  • Health walks covering 1–2 miles for those new to walking or returning to fitness

New walk leaders receive Walk Leader training, along with first aid and defibrillator training, and ongoing support from the team.

Last year, the project marked its 20th anniversary with a celebration recreating its first ever walk from the Foxhunter’s Car Park in Blaenavon to the Blorenge Trig Point.

Since its launch, the programme has welcomed more than 2,000 participants, with an average of 20 walkers joining groups each week.

Walks take place Monday to Friday, offering a friendly, accessible way for residents to improve their health, enjoy local green spaces and meet new people.

Lynne Mattravers, the council’s Health Improvement Officer, said: “Before the pandemic we had around 30 walk leaders, so seeing both new and long‑standing members step forward is fantastic.

"Over the years, the health benefits have been remarkable, with some walkers coming off diabetic medication, and one lady who was told she may never walk again now joins us three times a week.

"It’s also been a lifeline for many who’ve lost loved ones, helping them find friendship and support when they needed it most.”

Cllr Fiona Cross, Torfaen Council's Executive Member for Communities, said: “Take a Stroll is a great example of the Torfaen Deal in action, with local people and the council working side‑by‑side to support healthier, more connected communities.

"As we look ahead, we’ll continue creating more opportunities for people to get involved, build friendships and make a real difference in their communities.”
