Wales Nature Week

Residents are invited to reconnect with nature during Wales Nature Week (4–12 July) through a programme of free events taking place across Torfaen.

From mindful yoga sessions and guided nature walks to wildlife surveys, storytelling and hands-on conservation activities.

The week offers opportunities for people of all ages to explore, learn about and enjoy the natural environment on their doorstep.

The programme begins on Saturday 4 July with Yoga in Nature at Llanyrafon Manor. Participants can enjoy two gentle, sensory yoga sessions inspired by birdsong and the sounds of the natural world.

On Monday 6 July, residents are invited to join a Noticing Nature Walk in Pontypool Park, where a guided walk will focus on appreciating the sights, sounds and textures of nature.

Several events take place on Wednesday 8 July, including Storytelling in the Woods at Pontypool Park. Drawing on Welsh myth and folklore, the session will bring nature to life through storytelling in a woodland setting.

On 8 July, wildlife enthusiasts can discover the fascinating world of moths at Marvellous Moths in Henllys Local Nature Reserve, learning more about local species and their ecology.

Those looking to make a practical difference for nature can take part in the Big Balsam Bash at Llantarnam Ponds, helping to tackle invasive Himalayan balsam and support local biodiversity.

The celebrations continue on Friday 10 July with Carder Bee ID & Survey Training at Llwyncelyn Local Nature Reserve. Participants will learn how to identify and survey rare carder bee species and contribute to conservation efforts.

Creative minds can also take inspiration from the natural world at Wildlife in Watercolour, a nature-themed painting session suitable for anyone looking to express their appreciation of wildlife through art.

The programme of nature-themed activities does not end with Wales Nature Week. Residents can also look forward to Go Wild, which will take place in Pontypool Park on Saturday 25 July, offering even more opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature and learn about local wildlife.

Veronika Brannovic, Local Nature Partnership Coordinator, said: "Wales Nature Week is a fantastic opportunity for people to connect with nature, discover local wildlife and learn more about the important habitats we have across Torfaen.

“Whether you're interested in conservation, wellbeing, creativity or simply spending time outdoors, there's something for everyone to enjoy."

All events are free, but advance booking is recommended.

For those inspired to continue their connection with nature beyond Wales Nature Week, a new Nature Stewards programme has recently launched in Torfaen.

The volunteering initiative encourages people to play an active role in caring for local wildlife and green spaces while meeting others who share a passion for the natural environment.

Rooted in the spirit of The Torfaen Deal, the programme aims to bring communities together, foster pride in local places and help create a greener, healthier future for the borough.

Wales Nature Week events and the Nature Stewards programme are funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Healthy Planet, Healthy People project.
