National supermarket chain pleads guilty to food hygiene offences

WM Morrison Supermarkets has pleaded guilty to four food hygiene offences in their Cwmbran store.

A sentencing hearing will take place on 7 May 2026 at Newport Magistrates’ Court.

During a routine food hygiene inspection in August 2024, Environmental Health Officers identified multiple food hygiene offences in the bakery department.

The offences included failing to maintain the premises in a clean condition, failing to keep food contact equipment clean, failing to adequately supervise food handlers, and failing to implement and maintain food safety management procedures.

The bakery was closed immediately due to food safety risks and required a deep clean before reopening. Initially rated 1 (major improvement necessary), a re-inspection in October 2024 awarded a rating of 4 (good) after significant improvements.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, said: “This case demonstrates the important work of our officers in carrying out independent checks to ensure the food we buy is safe to eat.

“Their work often goes unseen, but they play a vital role in preventing ill-health through identifying non-compliances and taking action to secure necessary improvements, safeguarding the public, and reducing the cost of illness and burden on the NHS.”

Whilst every effort is made to work with businesses using an informal, educative approach, the Council will not hesitate to take formal action where the health and well-being of consumers is placed at risk.”
