Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, in Pontypool, has become the first to launch a new community food-sharing initiative for families of pupils of all ages.

Big Bocs Bwyd is a fast-growing Welsh initiative that’s transforming how schools tackle food insecurity, climate action, and community wellbeing.

The initiative, which officially opened on Friday, is available to all parents and carers of pupils at the school and offers low-cost food on a “pay what you can” basis.

It’s also aligned in the Curriculum for Wales, with pupils set to grow their own vegetables, create recipe cards, and help run the Bocs alongside staff and volunteers.

Cath Evans, Headteacher at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, said: "We’re proud to be the first to offer families of secondary school-aged pupils access to the Big Bocs Bwyd. This is about more than food - it’s about empowering our pupils, supporting families, and building a stronger, more resilient community."

"The project is giving our pupils hands-on experience in sustainability and community action, and we’re urging parents not to miss out on this fantastic opportunity."

Families of pupils at the school's nursery, primary, secondary and sixth form education at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw can access the scheme.

Big Bocs Bwyd is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday just outside the school reception—from 8:15 to 9:15am in the morning, and from 2:50 to 3:30pm in the afternoon.

Donations of tinned and other non-perishable foods are also welcomed.

Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Councils Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “This is a brilliant example of how schools are supporting families. By offering affordable food and practical learning, it empowers pupils and helps tackle food insecurity.

"It also strengthens our climate emergency response - giving young people the skills to lead on sustainability and well-being. Congratulations to everyone who made this possible.”

Big Bocs Bwyd started at Cadoxton Primary, in Barry, with early support from the Waterloo Foundation and Welsh Government.

The project now receives funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, and is supported by partners like Enterprise Cars, Castell Howell, and FareShare Cymru.
