A teenager from Cwmbran has made history by becoming the youngest-ever player to debut for Cardiff City Football Club.

Robert Tankiewicz stepped onto the pitch for the Bluebirds in their EFL cup match against Newport County earlier this month - just months after collecting his GCSE results at St Albans RC High School, in Pontypool.

Robert’s debut at the age of 16 years and 117 days broke the previous record held by former City player Aaron Ramsey by seven days.

Already a standout talent, Robert has represented Wales at U16 level and now proudly wears the number 55 shirt for Cardiff City.

Robert said: “It’s a dream come true to play for Cardiff. I’ve worked really hard for this moment, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s supported me—my family, coaches, and teachers. I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

He joined Cardiff’s academy at under-9 level and has since captained Wales at age-grade level, also earning a place in the under-17s squad. His Polish heritage means he remains eligible to represent Poland internationally.

Alongside his sporting achievements, Robert did well academically, earning a B grade in PE and, impressively, a B in Welsh, despite having moved to Wales from Poland at a young age.

Robert, who is now backing the council’s Not In Miss Out school attendance campaign, added:

“Showing up every day, whether it’s school or training, has really shaped how I approach things. Keeping a strong attendance record helped me stay focused and disciplined – and that’s something I’ve carried into my football. You’ve got to be committed if you want to succeed.”

Stephen Lord, Headteacher at St Alban’s RC High School, said:

"I could not be prouder of Robert and all that he has achieved. To become the youngest ever player to represent Cardiff City is an extraordinary milestone, and a testament to Rob’s talent, determination, and character.

“He has always shown maturity beyond his years, both on and off the pitch. His commitment to his development, his humility, and his fearless approach to challenges have made him a role model within our school community.

“At St Alban’s, we strive to nurture not only academic excellence, but also personal growth rooted in faith and values. Rob embodies that spirit, and we will continue to support him in every way we can and look forward to seeing his journey unfold.”
