More than 150 young people took part in a wide range of events and activities over the October half term, thanks to Torfaen Youth Service.

From Halloween themed youth clubs to creative cookery sessions and a youth activity day at Ashley House, in Cwmbran, the programme was aimed at young people aged between 11 and 24.

39 young people signed up through various clubs also got the chance to go on trips to Chessington World of Adventures and Ninja Warrior, in Cardiff.

Keira, 14, who attends the new Talywain Youth Club, said: 'Youth club is amazing, it’s the most social thing I have done in my life, and a real highlight is getting to meet new people.”

During the week, activities were also offered through the Torfaen Youth Service Resettlement Project, which supports young people who have fled their native country for refuge and a fresh start in the UK.

Launched in August, the resettlement scheme is open to young people aged 11 and over, and their families.

It has already helped 12 families resettle in the borough to date – thanks to support from the Youth Service, which provides access to youth clubs, holiday programmes, community-building activities and bespoke individual support.

Anna, 18, who relocated from Ukraine, said: “I have loved everything and enjoy making new friends.”

As part of the scheme, families can attend weekly get-togethers at Ashley House Youth Centre, in Cwmbran, and get support from the Ethnic Youth Support Team, a charity that helps young people from ethnically diverse communities who may be experiencing isolation.

Lina El Idrysy, from Displaced People in Action - a charity that supports refugees and asylum seekers to resettle in Wales, said: “These activities are more than just recreational outings; they provided a safe and welcoming space for young people to build friendships, explore new environments, and feel a sense of belonging.”

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “I’m continually impressed by the creativity and passion of the young people who shape their own youth service, and by the incredible youth workers who support them every step of the way.

“This half-term programme was yet another brilliant example of how inclusive, diverse, and engaging youth-led activities can be.”

The Youth Service is now preparing for its awards evening on Tuesday 11th November, celebrating young people’s achievements and contributions across the borough.
