Pupils are being invited to take part in a new council competition celebrating the highlights of school life.

They are tasked with coming up with creative designs for banners, posters and digital images to celebrate the wide variety of activities, resources and support available in schools to inspire pupils to attend school regularly.

Schools have until Wednesday July 16 to submit their entries and be in with the chance of winning up to £500 in vouchers.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "The Not In Miss Out campaign launched in 2022 and since then it’s featured more than 20 schools and had a social media reach of more than 1,100,000!

"Pupils are at the heart of the campaign and I look forward to seeing their designs celebrating the reasons they love going to school."

There are two categories - primary school design and secondary school design - with three prizes per category:

* 1st prize - £500 voucher plus winning design turned into a vinyl banner and digital photo frame

* 2nd prize - £250 voucher plus winning design turned into a poster

* 3rd prize - £100 voucher plus winning design turned into a Teams background

There will also be prizes for the individual winners.

The designs will be judged by a panel and the winners will be announced in September.

Schools can submit individual, class or year group entries and can enter more than once.

Designs need to be sent as JPEG, PNG or PDF files to pressoffice@torfaen.gov.uk. Please include “NIMO Competition” in the subject line.

School attendance in Torfaen has improved from an average of 92 per cent in primary schools and 88 per cent in secondary schools in 2022, but is still below pre-pandemic levels.

Research shows pupils with an average attendance of 95 per cent - which equates to a maximum of 10 days off per academic year - are more likely to get A*-C grades at GCSE.
