Pupils take centre stage in attendance campaign

The winners of the council's Not In Miss Out competition were congratulated at Full Council on Tuesday.

The pupils received certificates after their designs were chosen to be the face of the school attendance campaign, which has helped improve attendance rates since it was launched in November 2022. 

The following winners received their awards from Council Leader Cllr Anthony Hunt and Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education: 

  • Amy Stone, Florence James, and Ellie Stirling (Year 9 pupils) at St Albans RC High School
  • Charlotte Townsend and Charlie Mogford (Year 6 pupils) at Llantarnam Community Primary School
  • Alexia O’Sullivan (Year 5) and Charlotte O’Sullivan (Year 1) at Coed Eva Primary School

The secondary school winners also received a a £20 Amazon voucher, with the primary school pupils getting a £20 Smyths voucher.

Their respective schools also received vouchers for the categories they won, with St Albans RC High School receiving £850, Coed Eva Primary £500, and Llantarnam Primary £250.

The winning designs will be printed on vinyl banners and posters and displayed in schools across Torfaen in the New Year.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Education, said: "Thank you to all the schools who took part. The creativity and enthusiasm shown by pupils has been outstanding. Together, we are making school attendance a priority and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive."

Since its launch, the Not In Miss Out campaign, which celebrates the many great reasons to go to school, has reached over one million people.

Since 2022, overall attendance across Torfaen has improved by approximately 2.01% in primary schools to 92.82%, and by 5.22% in secondary schools equalling 89%.

Of the 22 unitary authorities in Wales, Torfaen is currently joint fifth with Powys in the national school attendance league table.
