Statement on the closure of Arthur Jenkins Residential Home from Councillor David Daniels, Torfaen Council’s Executive Member for Adult Services and Housing
The council have been working to find a positive outcome for the future of Arthur Jenkins Residential Care Home in Blaenavon since it was announced in September that the home would close. The decision taken by Hafod to close the home has understandably caused distress to the residents and relatives of people living in the home as well as concern for staff working in the home and the community of Blaenavon. We have extended the offer of support from our employability team to any staff at risk of redundancy.
Over the last few weeks, we have been supporting Hafod with their discussions with possible alternative providers and exploring whether the notice period could be extended safely and in a way that maintained a safe service at the home over the coming weeks. Unfortunately, as time has progressed, it has now become evident to both Hafod and the Council that extending the notice period would have further impact on the wellbeing of residents. In light of this, Hafod have taken the decision to proceed with the closure and to not extend the notice period beyond the current date in early December.
The Council’s focus is to ensure that the people living in the home are helped to find alternative accommodation at the earliest opportunity, so their wellbeing and safety is protected. Staff from the council’s adult social care teams will be working with residents and their families to find alternative accommodation and care plans are in place to ensure this is done in safely.
This is a very emotive and challenging situation and one the council recognises has a huge impact on the whole community in Blaenavon. While the council will need to consider the future of the building once Hafod vacate, this will be considered at an appropriate time in the future. Right now, the council’s focus remains on care and support for the residents and their families.
