More than 50 foster carers from across Torfaen have been recognised for their extraordinary commitment to supporting children and young people in care.

The celebration took place as part of Foster Care Fortnight – 12 – 25 May, a UK-wide campaign that shines a spotlight on the vital role foster families play in providing safe, nurturing homes for vulnerable children.

To mark the occasion, Torfaen Council’s Foster Wales team hosted a special appreciation event at The Parkway Hotel in Cwmbran, bringing foster carers together for a special awards ceremony and lunch.

Among those celebrated were Sharon-Ann, who received a special recognition award for caring for young people with complex needs through times of crisis and trauma.

Sharon-Ann, who has been fostering for 12 years and recently became a Myst Therapeutic Foster Carer, said:

“I’m very grateful to have been nominated. It was lovely to come together with other carers and be recognised for the time and care we’ve given to children when they’ve needed it most.

“Although it's challenging, the rewards are great and seeing the positive outcomes in the children are really the drivers for us as foster carers. They become part of our family.”

Two further special recognition awards were presented to kinship carers Michael and Sian from Cwmbran, and Emma from Pontypool who has cared for 16 children.

Emma said: “I was completely surprised to receive the special recognition award, but very grateful. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that what we do is appreciated when we welcome a young person into our home.”

For carers who were unable to attend, the Foster Wales team personally delivered bouquets of flowers to their homes, while those living further afield received gift vouchers.

Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Council’s Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said:

“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support and the positive impact foster carers have on our most vulnerable children’s lives.”

“As a local authority, we are dedicated to meeting the needs of children and young people in care, so by fostering with us, as part of Foster Wales Torfaen, you're ensuring that children stay connected with their community, family and friends.”
