A new-type of fitness class aimed at mothers and daughters has helped one woman to overcome her back and leg pain.

The free exercise class includes a range of spin, Pilates, circuits and exercise to music, as well as providing advice on nutrition and self-care.

Michelle Redman, 40, from Blaenavon, has been attending the class in Blaenavon Active Living Centre for just over a year with her ten-year-old daughter Ellie. Michelle said:

“We decided to give it a try as it was something we could do together, local, and free! Most women feel a little apprehensive about starting a fitness class on their own, but the fact that you could take your daughter along, instantly made it feel that it would be an easy-going class with no judgement.

“Before I started the sessions, I suffered a great deal with sciatica but being able to build strength and with the correct exercise, this problem has thankfully disappeared.”

The class runs every Wednesday from 5pm until 6pm and was set up to encourage mums to be positive role models for their daughters through exercise, whilst also aiding mums to overcome their own health concerns.

Due to it's popularity another class has taken off at Cwmbran Stadium, which runs every Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm.

Both sessions are organised by Torfaen Council's Sports Development team, in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, and forms part of a wider ‘Mind the Gap’ initiative to improve the health and wellbeing of women and girls in Gwent.

According to a report commissioned by the Gwent Public Service Board, healthy life expectancy for both women and men in Torfaen is lower than the Welsh average.

Moreover, women in Torfaen typically enjoy 55 years of good health, whereas men have an average of 61 years.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education said: “We are delighted to see the positive impact these classes are having on the health and happiness of women and girls in Torfaen. This is a great example of how we are working with our partners to address the health inequalities in our area and empower our residents to take charge of their own wellbeing.

“They are not only a fun and effective way to stay fit, but also a wonderful opportunity for mothers and daughters to strengthen their relationship and support each other.”

Classes are open to all mothers and daughters aged eight and above in Torfaen and are funded by Blaenavon Town Council & Cwmbran Community Council.
