An innovative sports programme is supporting dementia sufferers to relive their favourite sports and help them live happier and more active lifestyles.

Over 50 people living with dementia and their carers have signed up to the Dementia Friendly Sports Programme, run by Age Connects Torfaen in partnership with Torfaen Council’s Sports Development.

So far, participants have taken part in dementia friendly golf at Greenmeadow Golf Club, as well as weekly gym sessions with Strength & Performance Wales, with assisted tennis planned for the summer months.

A maximum of ten people can attend each activity, however additional sessions will be introduced if that number is exceeded.

More than three-quarters of a million people currently live with dementia in the UK and it’s expected that one in three of us will develop the condition at some point in our life.

Research shows regular exercise can support cognitive function as well as improving physical and mental wellbeing for people with dementia as well as their carers.

Torfaen Sports Development Officer, Cerys Williams added: “The activities that we have set up provide the participants with either an opportunity to try something new or to revisit a once loved pastime, whilst providing them with the physical, emotional and social benefits that physical activity can offer.”

“By collaborating with local community providers, including Pontnewydd Golf Club and Strength & Performance Wales, our vision is to empower more people living with dementia to actively participate in sports and enjoy an improved quality of life.”

Emma Wootten, Development Manager at Age Connects Torfaen, said: “We are immensely thankful to the local community facilities for their unwavering support and to the team at Torfaen Sports Development for their help and advice in developing this new initiative. Their contribution has allowed us to create a meaningful and impactful programme that will make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by dementia and their companions.”
