More than 170 foster carers from across Torfaen have been celebrated for their outstanding work in transforming the lives of children in their care.

It comes during Foster Care Fortnight, a nationwide campaign led by the Fostering Network, aimed at raising awareness about fostering and highlighting the remarkable impact foster families have on the lives of vulnerable children and young people.

The celebrations culminated in an awards ceremony and lunch at The Parkway Hotel, in Cwmbran, for around 80 foster carers, organised by Torfaen Council’s Foster Wales team.

Among them were Alison and Patrick, from Cwmbran, who have fostered 70 children over the past 12 years and were presented with a long service award.

Alison said: "We value the support we have received from the Family Placement Team and Torfaen Social Services, and it was lovely to get together with the team and other foster carers. It was nice to be acknowledged for the time and effort put in to support children in their time of need."

Kath, from Cwmbran, who received both a long service award and a special recognition award, said: "I was shocked to receive the special recognition award but very appreciative. It makes you feel good to know that people appreciate what we do when we invite a young person into our homes."

Bouquets of flowers were hand-delivered to those unable to attend the lunch, whilst foster carers residing outside the local area received tokens of recognition in the form of vouchers.

As part of the celebration, Foster Carers were also invited to take part in a ‘Foster Walk’ at Pontypool Park, led by Torfaen's Walk Coordinator Lynne Mattravers.

Sam, a newly approved foster carer from Pontypool, shared her experience, saying: "Meeting fellow foster carers and feeling part of the fostering community has been a delightful opportunity. It was fantastic to reconnect, have a joyous time, and feel appreciated. This celebration made me feel like part of a big family, warming my heart."
