A new support group is providing a welcoming space and activities for people living with dementia, memory loss and their carers.
The Forget Me Not Friday group is run by Torfaen Council's Community Connectors and meets every Friday at Cwmbran Library, 1pm to 3pm.
The group is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to socialise and engage in free dementia-friendly activities, while their carers chat over a cuppa.
Cwmbran resident Tina Scott cares for her husband Mike, and both regularly attend the group. Tina said: “Mike really enjoys taking part in the singing and craft sessions, and most activities are changed up each time we attend. The whole team who run it are helpful, supportive and most kind to all – we can’t thank them enough “
The sessions aim to promote social interaction, mental stimulation, and emotional well-being for those living with the illness, as well as providing much-needed support and respite for their caregivers in a separate area of the library.
On Friday 5 May the group will be holding a special Best of Britain Dementia session to celebrate the King’s Coronation. There will be activities including reminiscence and singing, along with plenty of tea and cake!
“We are delighted to offer this support group in collaboration with Cwmbran Library each week,” said Jennifer Lloyd, a member of the Torfaen Community Connectors team. “It is a valuable resource for those living with dementia, as well as their carers, to come together, share experiences, and engage in meaningful activities in a supportive environment.
“We would also like to encourage those who have previously cared for a loved one with dementia to join the group, as they are able to share their experiences and receive support.”
