Torfaen Gold Challenge & Emergency Food Aid Grants

Does your organisation have a fresh idea to boost access to healthy, affordable, sustainable food or cut down food waste?

Torfaen, a Silver Sustainable Food Place, invites community groups to apply for two funding opportunities to support local food initiatives:

Gold Challenge Community Food Grants

Fund A: £500 – £5,000 to help local groups pilot or grow projects improving access to sustainable food and food education

Fund B: £100 – £2,500 for food initiatives specifically supporting residents with protected characteristics

Groups can apply to Fund A, Fund B, or both.

Who can apply?

  • Community Interest Companies
  • Community Groups
  • Social Enterprises
  • Charities
  • Volunteer Groups
  • Public Sector & Businesses (including education settings) working with communities

Criteria

Projects must contribute to one or more of the following:

  • Good Food Movement – expanding public awareness and local food citizenship
  • Healthy Food for All – ensuring dignified, equitable access to nutritious food
  • Sustainable Food Economy – supporting local food businesses
  • Catering and Procurement – improving local food supply chains
  • Food for the Planet – reducing food waste and supporting climate-friendly food systems

How does it work?

Applicants must demonstrate clear community benefit, sustainable outcomes, and provide evidence of all spending.

Application deadline: 27 July 2026
Projects must be completed by: 16 February 2026

Emergency Food Aid Grant

This grant supports community food initiatives that address food poverty and increase access to nutritious food.

Capital Funding: Up to £1,000 for white goods, growing or distribution equipment

Revenue Funding: Up to £1,000 for purchasing good quality food and essential goods
Organisations may apply for one or both.

Who can apply?

  • Third sector organisations only, including:
  • Charities
  • CICs
  • Social Enterprises
  • Volunteer and Community Groups

Businesses are not eligible

Application Timeline

Open from 7 July – 10 November 2025, with four application windows:

  • Window 2: 07 July – 11 August (Notification by 15 August)
  • Window 3: 15 September – 29 September (Notification by 03 October)
  • Window 4: 27 October – 10 November (Notification by 14 November)

Applicants can apply in more than one window, but any previously awarded grant must be completed and closed before reapplying.
