Torfaen Sustainability

Torfaen Sustainability Logo

Sustainable development is widely defined as “development that meets the needs of today, without damaging opportunities for the future”. It is an approach to decision-making that looks to ensure a better quality of life for everyone, both now and for generations to come, by balancing the environmental, social, and economic pressures faced by our society and the planet.

As a signatory of the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Development Charter, Torfaen County Borough Council is committed to making sustainable development a central organising principle of our activities.

The aims of the Council’s sustainable development policy are:

  • social progress which recognises the needs of everyone
  • effective protection of the environment
  • prudent use of natural resources
  • maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment

Changing by Degrees, Torfaen's sustainability motto, shows how by making minor adjustments to the way we live, everyone can help reduce consumption of the earth's resources and live healthier, happier lives.
