An additional £100,000 is being invested in road repairs ahead of the second phase of the council's roads improvement programme.

The extra money will focus on Varteg Road and Coed-y-Cric Road, in Griffithstown, near County Hospital, following reports from highways inspectors and residents.

Work is also due to begin this month on the second of a five‑year £6.4 million highways resurfacing programme, which is delivering major improvements to local roads across the borough.

More than £1m will be spent during 2026/7 on resurfacing and structural patching work and highways asset improvements like bridges, road barriers and signals.

Plus £974,000 will be spent on preventative resurfacing on around 25 roads.

Cllr Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, said: "Our roads, like those across the UK, have been badly affected by the wet weather which has exacerbated potholes and hampered efforts to tackle them.

"It's important we continue to invest in preventative work to reduce potholes in the future but we have listened to our communities and identified additional budget to tackle some of the worst affected routes as a priority.

"We understand how frustrating it it has been for drivers but we're investing in tackling roads impacted by the weather and extending the life of roads where we can."

The Better Roads Torfaen local roads improvement programme follows a comprehensive survey of the borough’s highways last year.

The programme is funded through £4 million of additional council capital investment and £2.44 million from the Welsh Government’s Local Government Borrowing Initiative.

It will run in parallel with the council’s annual highways maintenance programme, which includes targeted improvements to key arterial routes requiring intervention.
