Micro-asphalt surface treatment work is underway to prevent around 25 roads from deteriorating.

Nearly £1 million will be spent on the preventative work over the next few weeks, which will target routes showing signs of deterioration as highlighted in a condition survey.

An extra £1 million is also being invested this year in resurfacing and large-scale repairs to roads with greater levels of wear and tear.

The following roads to be micro-asphalted are:

  • Tydies and Willins, Coed Eva - Friday March 27 - Saturday March 28
  • Teynes, Coed Eva - Sunday March 29
  • Old Abergavenny Road, New Inn - Sunday March 29
  • Bagley Court, Thornhill  - Monday March 30-Tuesday March 31
  • Penywain Lane, Pontypool - Tuesday March 31 - Wednesday April 1
  • Penmaes Road, Greenmeadow - Thursday April 2 and Tuesday April 7 - Wednesday April 8

The micro-asphalt work is due to be completed by the end of April, depending on the weather.

Micro-asphalt seals the surface and extends the life of the road by up to 15 years.

It is a dual application process, with the first application regulating the existing surface and the second application giving the final surface.

The material will remain wet for up to 30 minutes turn from brown to dark grey/back. The action of cars driving over the Micro-asphalt improves the newly laid surface and controls the speed of setting.

Loose aggregate may build up on the road for a period of time after completion, which is normal for this process. Please drive slowly and observe any temporary signs.

The road resurfacing and large-scale repairs will also be carried out this year.

It will focus on roads highlighted as showing greater levels of deterioration and following consultation with councillors.

Last month, an additional £100,000 was invested in large scale repairs on Varteg Road and Coed-y-Cric Road, in Griffithstown

The work is part of the council's five-year Better Roads local roads investment programme. Last year, 38 roads were resurfaced as part of the initiative, which runs alongside the council's annual highways budget.
