If you rent your home from a private landlord in Torfaen, the council’s housing team would like to hear about your experiences.

We want to try to ensure the local private rental sector is a good quality affordable option for residents looking for a home.

Your feedback will help shape a new Private Rented Sector Strategy 2026–2031 to set out a clear vision to make private rented housing more affordable, accessible and secure for residents.

While the private rented sector in Torfaen is smaller than other parts of Wales it plays an important role in meeting local housing need.

With demand for affordable homes continuing to rise, the Council is committed to ensuring that private renting in Torfaen is fair, supportive and offers residents a sustainable housing option.

The strategy will explore the challenges many private renters face, including affordability and security, and capture local residents’ experiences to help shape future support and policy.

It will also set out how the council will work alongside local landlords, recognising their vital role to maintain a high‑quality private rented sector.

The consultation, which runs between March 6 and April 10, follows engagement with private landlords, to help shape the way in which the council works with them to unlock the potential for residents. Private rented accommodation plays a vital and pivotal role in meeting the housing needs and requirements of the communities of Torfaen.

There are three drop-in sessions that you can attend to chat to the housing team about your experiences:

  • Blaenavon Heritage Centre - Tuesday 17th March 10am-2pm
  • Pontypool Leisure Centre - Tuesday 31st March 9:30am-1pm
  • Cwmbran Library - Thursday 2nd April 10am-2pm

Cllr David Daniels, Executive Member for Adults Services and Housing, said: “The private rented sector in Torfaen is smaller than other local authorities in Wales, with only 11 per cent of households privately renting, compared to 24 per cent living in social housing.

“We would like to support private landlords and tenants to ensure private renting is a safe and affordable option for people who cannot afford to buy a property but do not want to wait to be allocated one from a social housing provider.”
