A record-breaking number of volunteers have completed training ahead of the council's summer play programme.
Close to 500 volunteers, play helpers and staff members have been recruited by Torfaen Play Service this year, creating the largest workforce in the service's history.
This week, the recruits took part in a week-long training programme at West Monmouth School in Pontypool, covering topics including first aid, personal care, autism awareness, team games and inclusive play.
The trained workforce will now help deliver 33 daily play sessions, supporting close to 3,000 children every day throughout the school holidays.
Many are volunteering with the service for the first time, and will gain valuable experience and new skills to help with future college, university and employment opportunities.
Former volunteers have progressed into careers in play work, childcare, education and youth services.
Among this year’s volunteers are 16-year-olds Ffion Williams and Grace Treharne, both from Cwmbran.
Ffion said: "I have had a great week, i have received great practical and theoretical training. Can't wait to be on-site and meet the children"
Gracie said: "I’ve really had a fun week. I've made some new friends and built my confidence. I can't wait to have a fabulous summer"
This year's programme, which runs from Monday 27 July to Thursday 20 August, is made up of Food and Fun camps, Open Access Play, Play in the Park, as well as specialist play and respite sessions for children with additional needs.
Up to 30,000 healthy meals will be prepared for children attending the Food and Fun Camps, all provided by the council's catering service.
Demand for places has once again been high, with many sessions already fully booked and operating reserve lists.

"These opportunities provide children with safe, fun and enriching experiences throughout the holidays, while also giving volunteers valuable skills, confidence and experience that can support their future ambitions.

Volunteers and staff will come together at the end of the holiday period for a special awards event celebrating their contribution and achievements.
