Passenger numbers at a new park and ride train station in Pontypool and New Inn have increased by 11,000 in the first year.
Since the new facilities opened in February 2025, the station has seen a year-on-year increase in footfall every month apart from two.
The expanded park and ride service, which can be accessed from the A4042, offers 129 general parking spaces, 11 accessible bays, motorcycle and secure bicycle parking, convenience drop-odd bays, and a multi electric vehicle charging points.
The station itself has a new footbridge and lifts suitable for wheelchairs and bikes, improved platform seating areas, improved CCTV and lighting, and a new customer information system and help point.
Cllr Anthony Hunt, Council Leader, said: “Seeing passenger numbers rise in the first year is a clear sign that the Pontypool and New Inn Park and Ride is making a real difference to how people travel.
“The investment in improved parking and better facilities is paying off, and it’s encouraging more residents to choose sustainable transport.
“We’re committed to continuing this progress, reducing congestion on our roads and making rail travel a more convenient and enjoyable option for everyone.”
Transport for Wales, Station Manager for Pontypool and New Inn, Samantha Fairbanks said: “Seeing the number of passengers at Pontypool rising is fantastic and shows the result of close partnership working between Torfaen County Council, Network Rail and ourselves.
“The new bridge, car park and other key safety enhancements has made it so much more accessible for everyone to use and travel with confidence.
“As part of our Pay As You Go scheme, customers are really making the most of cheaper fares to and from the town across south east Wales.
“We’re excited to see how it continues to grow over the coming years.”
According to the Transport for Wales figures, April and November were the only months when passenger numbers from Pontypool and New Inn station did not increase.
Passenger figures at Cwmbran station have also increased over the past year.
The £7.1 million redevelopment was the first project completed under the Cardiff Capital Region Metro Plus scheme, part of a wider £50 million programme to deliver an integrated South Wales Metro.
The project was jointly funded by Cardiff Capital Region, the Welsh Government and Torfaen Council.
Other Metro Plus projects underway across the region include the Caerphilly Interchange, Merthyr Tydfil Interchange, and Porth Transport Interchange.
