A section of the A472 in Pontypool will be closed overnight next month to carry out essential maintenance on the canal bridge.

The east-bound lanes will be closed, from the Rockhill Road slip road and Pontypool Roundabout, between 7pm until 7am, on Tuesday December 2, and the west-bound lanes will be closed, between Pontypool Roundabout and the Rockhill Road slip road, overnight on Wednesday December 3.

The east-bound section will also be closed for six consecutive nights, between Monday December 8 and Saturday December 13, with the west-bound section closed overnight, between Sunday December 14 and Friday December 19.

Diversions will be in place via the A4042 and Usk Road. The emergency services and bus companies have been notified.

The second phase of work will take place underneath the bridge in the New Year. It's expected to start in early January and take approximately three months.

The canal and tow path will remain open although there is potential for some  disruption.

Cllr Mandy Owen, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "This work is essential to maintain the safety of the bridge. However, the A472 is a vital link through the borough, so we have asked our contractors to carry out the work at night to minimise the disruption.

"We're also working with our canal coordinator and the Canal and Rivers Trust to ensure people can continue to use the canal when the next phase starts. We will also be in touch with residents living close to the basin."

The council monitors and maintains more than 440 kilometres of roads and nearly 200 bridges, as part of its Highways Asset Management Strategy.
