Help shape walking and cycling routes

Posted on: Thursday 12 June 2025

We're updating our active travel network map and would like to hear what you think about walking and cycling routes in the borough.

Active travel refers to journeys where people walk, cycle, or use wheelchairs or mobility scooters to get to work, school, shops or to socialise. It can also refer to the journeys people take to get to a bus or train station.

The council must update its map outlining existing and future active travel routes every four years.

This information helps to identify routes that need to be improved, such as changes to the locations of dropped kerbs and crossing points, or additional facilities, like benches or cycle storage.

Tell us what you think online or in person by Sunday August 31.

  • Pontypool Market – Wednesday 25 June (10am-2.30pm)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Day – Saturday 28 June  (throughout the day)

Mark Thomas, Deputy Chief Officer Highways and Climate Change, said: "There are huge environmental, social and health benefits to supporting residents to be able to travel more actively.

"Having safe, accessible routes that connect residents with the places where they need to be such as work places, schools and shopping areas is critical.

"You feedback is essential in understanding what routes work well, what could be improved and whether our funding priorities are right."

Your views will help shape the updated map which will be subject to further consultation next year and finalised in 2027.

The new map will help to prioritise future applications for Welsh Government funding.

Earlier this year, the council also announced an additional £5 million to improve roads in the borough over the next five years.
