Secondary school to be example to others

A secondary school's approach to developing strong and positive relationships with pupils is to be highlighted to others.

In a report published, Estyn inspectors said Croesyceiliog School was a "welcoming and supportive community to which pupils and staff are proud to belong".

It said positive relationships were a notable strength at the school and have led to improvements in attendance, behaviour and educational outcomes, especially for pupils eligible for free school meals.

The school has now been invited to submit their approach to collaborative learning to Estyn as an example to others.

Headteacher Natalie Richards said: “We are delighted that the report recognises the progress we have made and the strong sense of belonging within our school community.

"This is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of our staff, pupils, governors and families. Our inclusive approach and commitment to supporting every learner is something we are very proud of.”

According to the inspectors, the school has a clear vision for its curriculum, which was developed with pupils, parents, governors, and partner primary schools, and incorporates five considerations: feedback, application of skills, challenge for all, explanation, and readiness to learn.

The curriculum supported by the school's Learning Manifesto, which focuses on mutual respect and positive working relationships.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "Congratulations to staff, pupils and the wider community at Croesyceiliog School for an  excellent Estyn report. The school has a clear vision for all its pupils which is supported by a positive and inclusive learning environment."

Last month, the school held an event to mark International Men's Day, following a similar event to mark International Women's Day in March.

The Estyn inspectors made three recommendations: to improve self-evaluation processes, increase opportunities to apply numeracy and digital skills, and more opportunities to practice Welsh and celebrate Welsh heritage and culture.
