Next week, Torfaen Council will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day) with a special civic service in Blaenavon.
The VJ Day 80 civic event was formally announced at the latest full council meeting by Council Leader, Cllr Anthony Hunt, and will commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War in the Pacific theatre.
It takes place at 7pm on Friday 15 August, at St Peter’s Church, Blaenavon, and follows the success of the VE Day 80 commemorations held earlier this year at St Gabriel’s Church, in Cwmbran.
The Council is working with the church and local groups to deliver a traditional service, led by Reverend Doctor Chris Walters. It will include a slow march of standards and clergy, with processional music by Matthew Bartlett, The Welsh Wedding Bagpiper.
The service will also feature readings from Phillip Alderman, HM Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, and The Rt. Hon. Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, among others.
Musical entertainment will be provided by South Wales vocalist trio The Toodle Pips, performing wartime classics such as We’ll Meet Again and Mr Sandman.
The service will offer visitors a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by the remarkable generation who secured peace and freedom for future generations.
Cllr Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen Council, said: “VJ Day marks the final chapter of the Second World War and the beginning of peace after years of global conflict.
“As we gather to reflect 80 years on, we honour the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those who served in the Pacific theatre. Their legacy is one of peace, and it is our duty to remember and uphold the values they fought for.
“Everyone is welcome to join the service in Blaenavon to pay tribute to this extraordinary generation.”
