An initiative aimed at bringing older single people together is making a real difference in reducing loneliness and isolation in the community.
Forgehammer CIC, a long-standing community hub in Cwmbran, has launched Befriending Bingo to help residents build social connections and friendships.
The idea came after the group noticed an increasing number of people living alone who weren’t attending any local clubs.
The first Befriending Bingo session took place in September and attracted more than 30 residents.
Following its success, bingo is now a regular feature on the centre’s calendar, taking place on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, from 1pm to 3pm. The next session will be held on Thursday 18 December.
For just £4, attendees can enjoy bingo, a light lunch, and unlimited tea and coffee – all served by the centre’s dedicated volunteers.
Alice Bosley, who runs Forgehammer CIC with her partner Leighton, said: “We’re working hard to combat loneliness and isolation among all members of our community. After seeing the success of our afternoon teas, we realised for some people it was their only social event of the month, so we introduced Befriending Bingo to give them another opportunity to connect.”
Volunteer and bingo regular Carol Stevens added: “I’m happy to help Alice and Leighton because they’re such lovely people. The bingo group provides great company and you’re always made to feel welcome.”
Forgehammer CIC has received support from Torfaen Council’s Capacity Building team, including a Community Resilience grant in 2023, which funded a new kitchen and boiler system to keep the centre running.
Alongside bingo, the group hosts a crib club, craft sessions, and low-cost afternoon teas, as well as a 'Public Living Room' every Friday from 10:30am, offering a warm, welcoming space for people to socialise and find support.
Cllr Fiona Cross, Torfaen Council’s Executive Member for Communities, said: “Forgehammer CIC’s approach is a fantastic example of community-led action, identifying a local need and responding with warmth, creativity, and care. Initiatives like these help build stronger, more connected and resilient communities.”

Residents who attend or run community groups are encouraged to join the conversation about The Torfaen Deal.
The Deal is a new social contract between the council, residents and partners, built on trust, shared responsibility and collective action to tackle inequalities and improve lives.
