This week, construction work starts on the £3.7m redevelopment of Greenmeadow Community Farm, with the farm due to reopen in Spring 2025.
Coley Hill Consultancy, have been employed by the council to craft a new vision and plan for the farm and the start of construction marks a major milestone on the journey to reopening.
Gay Coley, a founding member of the team at the Eden Project, said “Our plan involves renovating the historic buildings, creating great new indoor and outdoor spaces to eat, drink, learn and play whatever the weather. The council’s investment will breathe new life into this sleeping beauty, which will mean that locals and new visitors can come and learn about food and farming.”
Cllr Fiona Cross, Executive Member for Communities, said: “We are really pleased that the major construction work is starting in the ground and this important milestone marks the next step in the renovation, regeneration and re-opening of Greenmeadow Community Farm.
“The new facilities have been designed to retain the wonderful history and heritage of the farm while updating and expanding the facilities which will improve accessibilty for all visitors. Having the heavy machinery on site is an exciting phase of bringing our vision for the farm to reality.”
The Leader of Torfaen Council added: "The investment from the council provides the solid foundations for a sustainable future for the farm and will ensure the farm becomes a vibrant community asset. The new facilities will breathe new life into the farm, and it will once again become a fantastic visitor attraction for local families and new customers from across the region."
The redevelopment of the farm will include:
- a revamped Haybarn suitable for community events including weddings and parties
- a new all-weather indoor play barn with play equipment and a replacement outdoor adventure play area
- a new animal barn
- new and extended café
- an improved farm shop to promote local produce and suppliers
- attractive landscaping with woodland, trails and sensory paths
- improvements to the farm’s entrance and site accessibility.
The farm will also benefit from investment into new accessible pathways around the farm and a new energy efficient heating system.
The construction contract was awarded to G Oakley and Sons following a competitive tender process.
