As the New Year begins, Foster Wales Torfaen is continuing its campaign to recruit foster carers for teenagers - a group often overlooked but in urgent need of loving, stable homes.

Helen and Gary, from Cwmbran, have been fostering with Torfaen Council for almost a decade, and are passionate about breaking the stigma around fostering teens.

They have opened their home to many children over the years, most recently two teenage boys, and say the rewards are incredible.

Helen said: “Teenagers aren’t all troubled. They’re individuals who need trust, boundaries, and consistency.

“With a stable home, they thrive. Watching them grow, make better choices, and succeed because they feel safe and supported is amazing.”

The couple first started fostering after raising their own family and supporting their grandchildren.

They chose to foster teens because it fit their lifestyle, with no school runs or nappies, and they could continue working while caring.

Gary said: “We love the banter and humour. Teens might be shy at first, but a joke or two usually breaks the ice. When they start joking back, you know you’re getting somewhere.”

More than half of children living in residential homes or with Independent Fostering Agencies (IFAs) are teenagers, and this often means they are placed further away from their family and community.

By fostering with the local authority, carers can help keep young people local and connected to the people and places that matter most.

Helen and Gary want others to know that fostering teens isn’t just possible, it’s rewarding.

They have recently produced a blog on the Torfaen Foster Wales website, which captures their journey as foster carers.

Helen added: “If you’re thinking about fostering teens, go for it. They’ll surprise you, keep you laughing, and show you the incredible difference you can make in someone’s life.”

Foster Wales is hosting an online information event on Wednesday 4 February 2026 for anyone interested in fostering.

The session will cover the types of foster care, the process, and the support available, with time for questions.

You can register your interest here or for more information call the Foster Wales Torfaen team on 01495 766693.
