A new dragon mural unveiled in Pontypool town centre last month is to be extended, thanks to a team of young artists.
The striking 9m by 3m mural, celebrating the town’s industrial past, was created by artist Andy O’Rourke at the entrance to Riverside Car Park.
A series of 12 panels, also painted by Andy and designed by young people, will be installed along the walkway, between the entrance and the car park, from next week.
The first six panels, which have been designed by members of Pontypool Youth Council, were unveiled at Pontypool Museum last week.
Chenile Fox, who designed one of the panels as part of a project with Pontypool ArtREGEN, said: “It was such a fun experience, especially bringing young people together with the older generations of Pontypool.
"It really showed that teenagers are often misunderstood — most of us just want to be involved and make a positive impact.
“We were given the freedom to be creative. I’d love to do something like this again.”
The art project followed recommendations made by young people who attended the 2025 twinning festival last year, which included helping to making the town more visually appealing.
Helen Cooling, from Torfaen Council’s youth service, which supports the youth council, said: "I am very proud to support the youth council and their continuing efforts to champion their town of Pontypool.
“It is a great example of partnerships, young people having a voice and making a difference. I will continue to work with Pontypool Taskforce to develop more opportunities for young people through the arts."
Six other panels are being designed by pupils from the Gypsy Traveller education centre at West Monmouth School.
Funding for the initiative was successfully secured by Pontypool ArtREGEN, which also commissioned the dragon mural.
Young people took part in two creative sessions held in Cold Barn Farm, in Trevethin, were they used lights and a special camera to create the artwork.
ArtREGEN and Pontypool Youth Council are part of the Pontypool Community Taskforce, which is working to improve Pontypool town centre, supported by the council.
