This week, pupils from Greenmeadow Primary School were treated to a sneak peek of the newly transformed Greenmeadow Community Farm, ahead of its official reopening on Saturday, 13 September.
The children embarked on a tour of the site, feeding sheep in the animal barn, petting rabbits and guinea pigs in the brand-new cuddle corner, and taking a tractor and trailer ride through the farm’s grounds.
They also met the farm’s friendly dragon mascot ‘Rex’ and let off steam in the new wooden adventure play area and indoor play barn.
Year 2 pupil Darcy, said: "I absolutely loved the tractor ride it was bumpy but great fun and we loved watching all of the animals including the cheeky pig who escaped."
Fellow pupil Henry, said: ”We had a great time feeding the goats and the Play Barn was amazing. I can't wait to go back with my family.“
The farm, which is due to open this weekend, will be offering school tours linked to the curriculum from Monday, 22 September.
Pupils will be able to explore topics such as food production, animal care, sustainability, and biodiversity in a hands-on, engaging environment including seasonal workshops and activities such as:
- Butter Making – churn fresh cream into golden butter.
- Milking Demonstrations – meet British Friesian cows and learn how milk is produced.
- Candling and Handling – observe chick development inside eggs.
- Woodlands and Habitats – build dens, light fires, and toast marshmallows.
- Egg Collecting – trace the journey from coop to kitchen.
Claire Moses, Headteacher at Greenmeadow Primary School, said:
“Our pupils had a fantastic time at the farm. The visit brought learning to life in a way that’s hard to replicate in the classroom. The new educational offer is diverse, immersive and perfectly aligned with the curriculum. We’re already planning our next visit!”
Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “Greenmeadow Community Farm isn’t just a visitor attraction, it’s a working farm with a rich educational offer for schools across the region.
“As part of our ‘Not In Miss Out’ campaign, we’re reminding families that every school day counts - and days like these are not to be missed. They're great fun and help build the skills, confidence and curiosity that children need to thrive.”
“Through our County Plan wellbeing objectives, we’re committed to raising educational attainment and championing opportunities for children and families across Torfaen.”
Claire Barton, from the farm's education team said: "Educational visits like this are vital. They offer children the chance to learn and connect with nature in meaningful ways. These experiences support the new Curriculum for Wales by enhancing pupils’ understanding of the natural world and encourage creativity, confidence, and enterprise.
Prices are from £5 per pupil.
